student travel

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad/Roughing It

In the age of technology, traveling has become so accessible. With the internet as our guide, we are able to make plans and accommodations, and research new places to visit with just a few clicks or taps. Travel is important for people of all ages, but especially for kids and teens. Why? Take a look at our top 5 reasons why student travel is so important.

1. Traveling is a form of education
Sure, it’s interesting and educational to learn about different places and events in history class. But how about experiencing textbook knowledge in real life? Being able to see a historic or famous place in person is a completely different educational experience than just reading about it. There’s so much more to learn when you are able to set foot in a new place – and it’s much more memorable than just reading about it in a classroom!

2. It broadens perspectives
One of the most important parts of growing up is being educated about other cultures. It is easy to feel comfortable living inside a small bubble when you’re a kid; growing up in a city or town that you call home and not having a more cultural perspective about the world. Being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and experience another way of living is an extremely important life lesson.

3. Allows us to try new things
Many different cultural experiences that we can partake in are exclusive to certain areas and regions of the world. Every city or state or country has special foods, activities, customs, celebrations and more that could be new and unique to visitors. Traveling to a new place allows us to take part in trying new things that we wouldn’t have access to normally.

4. Helps us escape the comfort zone
We are not always going to be able to play it safe in life – though we want to protect them, kids and teens eventually must learn that not everything will be easy or familiar. Sometimes traveling to a new place is a great way to learn this. Being surrounded by a new, unfamiliar place or an unknown language can be intimidating and scary, but it’s important to experience while you’re young in order to provide a good basis for future endeavors.

5. It’s fun!
Overall, being a kid is about having fun – and traveling is such a great way to do that! Exploring a new place has so much to offer, and there are endless fun-filled activities and experiences to immerse yourself into. It’s exciting to travel somewhere you’ve never been, or return to a favorite place you’ve visited before. There’s always something new to discover.
